An inquest took place yesterday, Friday 2 February, into last year’s fire at Trumpets Hill Road, Reigate, in which a family of three died.

The coroner found that Tiago (also known as Tito) Nunes, 6, had been unlawfully killed, but reached open verdicts in the case of his father, Tiago Nunes, 30, and his mother Adriana Nunes, 41.

The incident happened in the early hours of 24 January 2017, in a cottage at Little Santon Farm, where Mr Nunes worked as a gardener.

Get Surrey reports that the inquest, at Surrey Coroner’s Court in Woking, concluded that one or both of Mr and Mrs Nunes deliberately started the fire, but that it was not possible to say who or why.

Petrol had been poured and lit in the master bedroom, causing an explosion that instantly killed all three occupants.  The fire then burned through the night, destroying the cottage.

The Get Surrey article includes details of evidence given about the fire and the background, and a statement from the family after the verdicts.

Our thoughts are with those affected – as one of the national news articles says: “just awful”.
