External restoration work at Knights of Reigate is expected to complete around 27 April, with the shop continuing to remain open throughout the project.
Knights says the work is chiefly aimed at restoring the shop front and facade above, which have been damaged by wind, rain and traffic pollution. Only minor cosmetic works, to the haberdashery and lingerie departments, are taking place inside.
Eric Shields, Store Manager, said “The business itself has been in Bell Street in one shape or form since 1883 and our aim and responsibility as custodians of this iconic building is to restore the frontage to its former glory.”
The Bell Street premises are Grade II listed.
