Borough councillors have elected Cllr Mrs Joan Spiers as Mayor, and Cllr David Powell as Deputy Mayor, for 2015/6.
The Mayor and Deputy Mayor were appointed at a Reigate and Banstead Borough Council meeting on 28 May 2015.
Over the municipal year they will represent the borough at a range of functions, from formal receptions and official openings to visits to local community groups and clubs, as well as hosting fundraising events for chosen charities.
The Mayor has given details of this year’s good causes:
“My theme of ‘encompass all’ is about showing support for and recognising the contributions of all parts of our community. My choice of charities – YMCA East Surrey and The Royal British Legion – very much reflects that.
YMCA East Surrey is a local charity that does an excellent job of supporting the young people who need it most. I have also chosen The Royal British Legion as both my Deputy Mayor, Cllr David Powell, and I are committed and life-long supporters of this marvellous charity. We ask so much of our armed forces so choosing it as one of my charities is a very small way of saying ‘thank you.'”
The Mayor, Cllr Mrs Spiers, has been a borough councillor for Kingswood with Burgh Heath since 1984, and Leader of the Council twice, with her most recent term ending in 2013. Her background includes working as a professional osteopath and running a company of nursing homes. Her late husband, Norman, was Mayor in 1993-1994.
Deputy Mayor, Cllr Powell, is a borough councillor for Horley West and also a Horley Town Councillor. After an army career he then worked in local government. In 2014 he received an award as the top individual fundraiser for The Royal British Legion. He also holds the world record for being the oldest person (78 at the time) to skydive from 30,000 feet.
Both are Conservative councillors.
