An independent beer shop has put in a planning application at the former La Lanterna site, at 73 Bell Street, Reigate.
Hop Stop Limited, based in Oxted, wants to change the use of the ground floor unit from A3 (restaurant/cafe) to A4 (drinking establishment).
This would allow the company to use the site as a second, additional, branch.
Hop Stop says in the application to Reigate & Banstead Borough Council:
“This will be a combined specialist beer bar and retail shop focused on serving quality beer for drinking on site or taking away.
In addition we would serve a selection of wine, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks. To compliment the drinks we would offer a small and tailored grazing menu of prepared food.
Our vision is to provide a space which is comfortable and welcoming where the emphasis is on quality over quantity.
It will be a relaxed and pleasant drinking environment for friends and colleagues to meet at lunchtime or after work, a place to have a drink before dining in town or going to the cinema and of course a place for beer enthusiasts to find the latest beers from the brewing world.
We would also like to hold special events such as bottle share evenings, tutored tastings and beer related talks.”
The building was altered and extended – including putting flats in above – after Italian restaurant La Lanterna closed at the site a few years back.
Since completion of the work in 2016, the shop has remained vacant: the application puts this forward as one of the arguments for allowing the change of use.
The site sits within an area marked for small businesses, as well as in the Chart Lane Conservation Area.
Reigate & Banstead’s conservation officer has already commented that he has no objection, subject to a proviso about any external timbers being painted.
The change of use application is a separate process from any licensing or signage applications that may be made.
Developer Buxton Homes also currently has an application in to change the leaded shop windows to clear glazing, something said to have been raised by would-be occupiers.
