Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses following a violent altercation between two groups of men in Reigate Town Centre today, Monday 8 June 2015.
At around 4.45pm Surrey Police received reports of a fight taking place between two groups of men in the High Street close to the clocktower.
A large number of response and neighbourhood officers quickly attended the location and officers arrested five men in their late teens or early twenties on suspicion of affray. The men remain in police custody while enquiries continue.
There are no reports of any serious injuries but one man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Acting Police Sergeant Leanne King said:
“I believe there were a number of people in the area around the time that this fight occurred and I would ask those who witnessed the incident or the events surrounding it to contact police so we can establish the facts surrounding the altercation.
We are currently working through a number of enquiries, including reviewing local CCTV footage and speaking to people in the area, but we still need to hear from anyone who can help us with the investigation.
I appreciate that there was a large police presence in the centre of Reigate following the incident which must have been alarming for people in the area but I hope the fact we swiftly arrested a number of people in connection with the incident will reassure residents that we are taking this matter seriously.
Following this incident and disruption over the weekend there will be additional high visibility patrols in and around the centre of Reigate over the coming days.
Surrey Police will not tolerate this type of violence within its towns and works to maintain a safe, pleasant environment for everyone to enjoy. We will do everything possible to bring those responsible to justice.”
Anyone who witnessed the altercation or who has any information about the incident is asked to call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference P15146988. Alternatively they can call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
