The work of volunteers across East Surrey Hospital was recognised at a Christmas party earlier this month, with long service awards also presented – some of them for 25 years’ service.
The event, attended by many of the hospital’s volunteers, was opened by Michael Wilson CBE, chief executive at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust which runs the hospital. He said:
“I am pleased to recognise the valuable contributions made by volunteers and to thank them for their hard work and dedication in supporting the quality of care we provide to our patients.”
Volunteers undertake a wide range of roles at the hospital, including administrative support, welcoming patients and visitors at the information desk, collecting post, and running the bookshop.
Others help with the hospital environment, such as by litter picking or maintaining the gardens and fish tanks in waiting rooms.
More recently, volunteers have visited wards with drinks and snacks trolleys which also include toiletries for patients.
Among those being celebrated were volunteers from the East Surrey Macmillan Cancer Support Centre, and individuals who help to run Radio Redhill, the hospital’s radio station.
Joy Matthews, volunteers’ manager at the trust said:
“Our volunteers are valued by colleagues and patients for their commitment and support in helping SASH to welcome and help out patients during their visit and stay at East Surrey Hospital.”
