*Update 5 Oct: the centre will partially reopen on Sunday – our latest story is here*
Donyngs Leisure Centre at Linkfield Lane in Redhill remains shut after a fire on Friday afternoon (4 October) which led to the building being evacuated.
A sign at the centre says it will be “closed until further notice”, and that Donyngs website will have updates.
Surrey Fire & Rescue were called to the fire at 3.42pm on Friday afternoon, attending with three appliances and a fire officer. They used breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the fire.
A Surrey Fire & Rescue spokesperson has confirmed that there were no injuries, and that investigations continue.
A number of people in the building at the time have since used social media to praise the actions of centre staff and other workers for their help in the evacuation, as well as local residents and the Hawthorns Surgery who joined in the effort to keep warm those who’d been swimming.
Surrey Live is running a live blog on the story.
Investigations into yesterday’s fire at our Donyngs leisure centre are still ongoing but I wanted to praise work of the centre staff who quickly and efficiently evacuated the building and made sure that everything was safe pic.twitter.com/J23NBKtpeR

Been down to Donyngs to find out when it might reopen. @SurreyFRS still at scene and Donyngs staff advising public of closure at the road junction towards the entrance to the centre.
Might be an idea to try to call the centre in the morning if you are planning to visit tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/0HJtLguN4K
