The post office at Martin’s in Reigate High Street is set to close next September, with the Post Office looking for a new operator or location.
The store itself will also close next year, although no date has been given for that.
Martin’s is run by national retailer McColl’s who have decided to end their lease of the site, and resign from the Post Office franchise.
The premises are not owned by the Post Office.
A Post Office spokesperson said today: “We want to maintain Post Office services in Reigate as we understand how important a post office is to a community.
“Due to the resignation of the current operator, we are actively looking for a new operator. The vacancy will soon appear on our website and our field team will be visiting local retailers.”
Under agreed guidelines, the Post Office has to announce a temporary closure nearer the time – but the Post Office spokesperson said they will be working hard to avoid such a situation.
A spokesperson for McColl’s said: “Having explored all options regretfully we have taken the difficult decision not to renew the lease at the Martin’s store on the High Street in Reigate and have given the Post Office notification of this.
“We will continue to trade the store and the Post Office until the last day of trading which will be sometime next year.
“We will be talking to all of the affected colleagues over the next few weeks about the timescales of the closure.
“We are obviously saddened to no longer be operating the store, and our priority has been to support all affected colleagues.”
