Downloads from Surrey libraries surge during coronavirus outbreak

Surrey’s library buildings may be shut because of the coronavirus, but there have been big increases in the number of people joining the service and the amount of digital reading matter being downloaded.

Over 4,000 electronic books, comics and magazines were downloaded in March, ten times the average monthly figure.

And although library doors were closed at the end of Friday 20 March, some 506 people signed up with Surrey Libraries between 23 March and 6 April.

Surrey County Council says that’s nearly double the 260 people who would normally join in such an 11-day period.
