Donyngs Leisure Centre at Linkfield Lane in Redhill will partially reopen on Sunday 6 October following a fire on Friday which led to the evacuation of the building.
The Donyngs website says the centre will reopen from 6.45am on Sunday morning: “All areas will open apart from the sports hall and pools. There will be no changing room facilities. Thank you for your patience.”
Surrey Fire & Rescue were called to the incident on Friday afternoon at 3.42pm. They attended with three appliances and a fire officer.
Crews used breathing apparatus and two hose reels to put out the fire. There were no injuries, and a Surrey Fire & Rescue spokesperson said on Saturday morning that investigations continue.
News website Surrey Live reports the fire as having begun in the men’s dry changing rooms.
A number of people in the building at the time have since used social media to praise centre staff and other workers for their help in the evacuation, as well as local residents and the Hawthorns Surgery who joined efforts to help those who had been in the swimming pool keep warm.
Investigations into yesterday’s fire at our Donyngs leisure centre are still ongoing but I wanted to praise work of the centre staff who quickly and efficiently evacuated the building and made sure that everything was safe pic.twitter.com/J23NBKtpeR
