Outwood pub gets behind local family hit by cancer with fundraising effort

Matt Hodges with Grace and sons

The Dog and Duck pub in Outwood is putting together a fundraising effort, including a family fun day, to help a local resident, Matt Hodges, and his young family.

Matt has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, Epithelioid Sarcoma. After several rounds of chemotherapy, doctors have concluded that his body is not responding and have advised him to take quality time making memories with his family while he can.

Publican Donna Hetherington says: “We want to raise enough money to be able to send Matt, his fiancee Grace and two sons, Archie 4 and Frankie 1, to Disneyland Paris. They are bringing forward their wedding to July, and to be able to go on such a trip would be magical for all of them.”

The pub is holding a family day on Saturday 22 June, from 11am until 5pm, followed by an auction and a musical event in the evening featuring 90s soul singer, Kenny Thomas, and local funk artist, Kat Jax.   All profits from the day will go to the family.

“The local community have been very generous with their donations and the musicians are playing free of charge,” says Donna. “However, we are still looking for more help. We need auction items, raffle prizes, tombola prizes (new and wrapped) and cakes. In particular, we are seeking a sponsor for the marquee in the garden and more tables and chairs for the event.”

Anyone who can help is asked to contact Donna by e-mail or by phone on 01342 844552/ 07497 534856.

There’s also a crowdfunding page, and a Facebook page for the event.
