A sister branch to the award-winning Saffron Summer Indian restaurant in Chessington opened last week at 15 Church Street, Reigate.
The new restaurant, on the site of what used to be Clove, had been due to open in March but that was pushed back because of the coronavirus lockdown.
The menu features Saffron Summer signature dishes, such as its Goan wild boar vindaloo (which the restaurant says bears no comparison to the fiery curry house staple), Guinea Fowl Banjara, Chingri Malai from Calcutta, and Keralan Seafood Moily.
The kitchen is led by executive head chef Awanish Roy, who transfers from the Chessington operation.
He trained at the renowned Oberoi Hotels in India, before moving to London to work in the famous Cinnamon Club, Roti Chai and Chai Ki restaurants in London.
Plans for an extensive marketing campaign for the Reigate opening, with a special VIP launch dinner, have had to be put on hold, given the current coronavirus restrictions.
Instead the restaurant is announcing its arrival with a 20 percent discount on all eat-in and takeaway food orders, Monday to Thursday, until the end of August.
The restaurant will operate at 50 percent capacity to maintain social distancing, with a special sanitising regime in place.
Staff will wear masks and gloves, while customers will be offered hand sanitisers on arrival.
Owner Ralph Sousa, who has owned restaurants and hotels in Portugal and Goa for 20 years, said that in the past many Chessington customers travelling from Reigate had asked for a Saffron Summer nearer to home, even alerting him to potential sites.
“I came and researched the area, loved the vibe and am convinced the locals will appreciate our unique modern take on classic regional dishes from the Sub Continent,” he said.
“Although we’ve had a long delay, as a country we cannot all stay in lockdown forever and we all need to help kick start the economy and support our suppliers.”
The restaurant opened last week, on Tuesday 14 July. Booking and other details are on its website.
The existing Chessington branch is currently listed 1st on TripAdvisor out of 31 restaurants in that area, and in 2018 was named “Newcomer of the Year” at the Asian Curry Awards.
