In response to the coronavirus outbreak, a temporary mortuary will be located at Surrey Fire & Rescue Service’s headquarters off Wray Park Road in Reigate, Surrey County Council has confirmed.
Another will be situated in Guildford, at the University of Surrey’s Vet School.
The aim of the two facilities is to reduce the pressure on hospital mortuaries, as part of plans drawn up by the Surrey Local Resilience Forum, the body responsible for emergency planning in the county.
The council said today: “These new arrangements are to ensure the deceased are treated with dignity and respect [and] have been put in place by the Surrey Local Resilience Forum, who are committed to ensuring that the bereaved will be supported and treated with care and compassion, and their wishes will be respected wherever possible.”
Iron sheeting at the Reigate site had prompted discussion on social media earlier this week.
Elsewhere in Reigate & Banstead, the borough council has converted the Harlequin theatre into a distribution centre for vulnerable residents.
