Reigate Green Party candidate turns to crowdfunding

A GrJonathanEssex resizeeen Party member, Jonathan Essex, is using a crowdfunding website to raise funds for his campaign to become the MP for Reigate.

Mr Essex said: “We are asking people to pledge what they can to help us cover the election deposit and the costs of printing leaflets and letters to reach voters and tell them about Green policies.” He hopes to raise £2,000.

Crowdfunding websites enable individuals to raise money, from website members, for projects.   The Green Party says crowdfunding “has already been highly successful in raising campaign funds for Green candidates across the country.”

Mr Essex’s selection as the Green Party’s candidate for the 2015 General Election was announced earlier this month by Surrey Green Party. He is described as a chartered engineer and environmentalist who has worked in the UK, Bangladesh and Vietnam on power, transport and maritime infrastructure projects.

Mr Essex is at present the Green Party’s only Surrey County Councillor, representing the Redhill East division. He is also one of three Green borough councillors in Reigate and Banstead, all representing the Redhill East ward.

The MP for Reigate is currently Crispin Blunt (Conservative).
